AIBC awards celebrate artistry and dedication

VANCOUVER - British Columbia's architectural firms are celebrating their artistry and achievements.The Architectural Institute of British Columbia (AIBC) has announced the winners of its 2017 Architectural Awards, held on May 10 in Vancouver.

Patkau Architects Inc. received the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia's Award in Architecture in the medal category for their work on the Audain Art Museum in Whistler, B.C., as did D'Arcy Jones Architecture Inc. for their work on the Friesen Wong House in Coldstream, B.C.

In the merit category, KPMB Architects and HCMA Architecture + Design Inc. took a Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia's Award in Architecture for their work on the UBC Robert H. Lee Centre, and Frits de Vries Architect Ltd. won for a Tsawwassen Beach Home.

The AIBC Emerging Firm Award, which according to the AIBC "celebrates and encourages newly-established firms that have embraced broader, modern types of practice reflecting the changing nature of the profession," went to D'arcy Jones Architecture Inc.

AIBC Special Jury Awards went to Proscenium Architecture and Interiors Inc. for their work on the restoration and renewal of the Christ Church Cathedral in downtown Vancouver, specifically for their "long-term stewardship of a significant heritage resource and seismic upgrading technology." The other Special Jury Award went to DCYT Architecture for their work on Sneakerbox, a West Vancouver retail outlet.

The 2017 AIBC awards received 46 submissions and the jury was chaired by Michael Heeney, a principal with Bing Thom Architects Inc.; Alex Bozikovic, an architectural critic with the Globe and Mail; Andrew Gruft, a retired architect and professor emeritus at the UBC School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture; Donald Luxton, the principal of Donald Luxton and Associates Inc.; Jason King, owner of Jason King Architects; and Peeroj Thakre, the principal of ph5 Architecture Inc.
