Business Council of British Columbia chief economist Jock Finlayson was a keynote speaker at the recent Open Shop Leaders Forum in Whistler, B.C.
Finlayson explained the perils and possible advantages of NAFTA renegotiation, and said that President Trump's economic agenda, if enacted, might be of some benefit to Canada. He also pointed to the new U.S. approach to immigration as a possible positive for Canada with skilled workers heading north.
The divergence in energy and climate policy could be a hindrance, as Trump will do nothing to address climate change while the Canadian government will go ahead with their climate change policies at some cost.
Finlayson added while global demand is increasing for "clean tech", it is at best a boutique industry at present.
"Even if it grows by three to four times, it's little more than a rounding error," he said.
