The Manitoba government announced in early February that construction has started on a new $15.1-million training facility to provide skilled workers to the province’s transportation sector.

The Manitoba government plans to make the province a major transportation hub in North America, by spending more than $1.5 billion dollars on the construction and maintenance of highways and bridges between 2008 and 2011.

The plan is part of the Manitoba government’s strategy to renew highways and bridges, which has entered its second year.

In support of this strategy, the Manitoba government announced on Feb. 1 that construction has begun at the Heavy Equipment Transportation Centre at Red River College.

The training facility provides pre-employment training programs such as heavy-duty equipment mechanic and outdoor power-equipment technician.

Funding for the training centre includes $12.6 million from the province, with the balance coming from a private-sector capital campaign.

“The new heavy equipment training facility will immediately increase the college’s capacity to train technicians by 60 per cent,” said Doug Harvey, president of Maxim Transportation and chair of the Red River College capital campaign.

Red River College (RRC) has seen enrolment in heavy-equipment transportation courses more than double since 2001. The new building will allow the college to expand capacity to 368 students by 2009-2010, from the current 230.
