A City of Calgary website that maps and tracks infrastructure projects and dollars has received national recognition.

The calgaryinfrastructure.ca website was launched in June and features an interactive map that identifies most of the 600 capital projects funded by the City of Calgary’s approved 2009 – 2013 capital budget.

The plan contains $6 billion in capital investments.

The website, which was developed and built entirely in-house at a cost of $25,000, won an international award called The Interactive Media Award for Outstanding Achievement in September.

This award was presented for exceeding the “highest standards of excellence in website design and development” under the category of ‘Government.’

More recently, the website earned additional recognition.

Ray Danyluk, Alberta’s minister of municipal affairs, presented the website with an honourable Mention at the 2009 Minister’s Awards for Municipal Excellence last month at the annual Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA) conference at the Telus Convention Centre.

“This website gives the citizens of Calgary, as well as our funding partners, the ability to see exactly where our money’s being spent and how it’s being spent and where the stimulus is going in the economy,” said Terry Wong, the website’s project manager.

It shows each project’s details, construction schedule, progress status and sources of funding. Project costs can all be tracked via the mapping tool.

In some instances photos and videos of construction progress are also available.

“The site is Web 2.0 enabled and uses advanced technologies such as Flash, Java Script, Flex mapping - but we’re most pleased because we adhered to stringent accessibility guidelines, while still being able to create an engaging user experience,” said Ron Singh, project lead.
