Nanaimo, British Columbia residents will soon vote whether the city of Nanaimo can borrow $22.5 million to fund completion of a $65 million water treatment plant.
The plant is scheduled for completion in 2015, and is currently in the detailed design phase. Design will take another year to complete but planners expect construction to begin in 2013.
Higher levels of government have come under fire from city of Nanaimo councilors for not contributing enough to the project, even though Nanaimo was mandated to bring its water quality up to spec with Canadian drinking water guidelines. The city has already spent $3 million on the project.
Nanaimo city council sent the issue to referendum on June 13.
