Seaspan Marine shipyards of North Vancouver was awarded $8 billion of a $35 billion shipbuilding contract by the federal government on October 19.

The Seaspan contract was for seven non-military vessels, with the $25-billion war-ship contract going to Halifax’s Irving shipyard, who will build 21 combat ships.

The winning bids were announced in Ottawa by Francois Guimont of Public Works and Government Services, the department in charge of procurement.

The only other shipyard bidding on the project was the Davie shipyard in Levis, Quebec. They did not win but are eligible to bid on $2 billion of contracts to build smaller ships.

The next step for the shipyards is to finalize agreements with the federal government and negotiate contracts for the first project in each package of work.
