British Columbia premier Christy Clark, health minister Mike De Jong and several young patients all broke ground on April 4, 2011 to commemorate the beginning of construction of the BC Children's and BC Women's Hospital redevelopment project.

The redevelopment of the hospital will begin with the $90.5 million Clinical Support Building, a two-storey, 2,346 square meter building with an office environment and 80 underground parking stalls. The building will contain support services and clinical faculty who will be moved from a building scheduled for demolition to make way for a new Acute Care Centre. Renovations and expansion are also planned for the existing BC Women's Hospital.

The total cost of the project is estimated to be $700 million, with a final cost determined after procurement is complete.

The Clinical Support Building is scheduled for completion in 2012.
