Construction began last week on faregates for Vancouver's Commercial-Broadway Skytrain station. The new gates are the start of a $171 million upgrade to the Skytrain system.

Faregates will be installed in every Skytrain station by 2013 and will use an electronic passcard system for access. A total of 400 faregates will be built. Construction will include electrical upgrades, and the relocation and installation of fare machines and gates.

The project is part of the OnTrack program that includes a number of maintenance projects, upgrades and investments taking place along the system during SkyTrain’s 25th anniversary. Other elements of the program include replacing the running rails and power rails, as well as improving accessibility to the system.
