Construction began on July 19 on faregates for Vancouver's Commercial-Broadway Skytrain station. The new gates are the start of a $171 million upgrade to the Skytrain system.

Construction began on July 19 on faregates for Vancouver's Commercial-Broadway Skytrain station. The new gates are the start of a $171 million upgrade to the Skytrain system.

Faregates will be in every Skytrain station by 2013 and will use an electronic passcard system for access. A total of 400 faregates will be built.

the British Columbia provincial government contributed $40 million of the $171 million, with an additional $30 million from the Canadian government through the Building Canada fund. Translink is funding the other $100 million through fares, property taxes and gas taxes.
