British Columbia premier Christy Clark announced on September 28 at the annual meeting of the Union of British Columbia Municipalities that the provincial government will immediately begin planning and project development to replace the George Massey Tunnel under the Fraser River.

Originally built in 1958, the tunnel currently carries over 80,000 people a day and is now a focal point for congestion.

Clark also announced $650 million will be committed over a 10 year period to continue four-lane improvements to the Trans-Canada Highway from Kamloops to the Alberta border.
