Work has begun on connecting the Cape Horn Interchange to the Port Mann Bridge. The project involves 15 new ramps, structures and direct connections.

Traffic pattern changes will take place in several stages. On September 16, Lougheed Highway eastbound will be shifted to a new and final alignment south of Highway 1, and on September 18, the three lanes of Highway 1 eastbound traffic will be transitioned from the old bridge onto the new Port Mann Bridge.

On September 19, a new overpass connecting westbound bridge traffic to Lougheed Highway eastbound will open, and then on the weekend of September 22-23, crews will complete and open another new overpass, the longest in the Port Mann/Highway 1 Improvement Project, which will connect Lougheed Highway westbound to Highway 1 eastbound.

“Reconstructing the Cape Horn Interchange is a megaproject within the Port Mann/Highway 1 megaproject, and a crucial part of the solution to our congestion problems. But before we get the benefits of the new Port Mann Bridge, there’s still a lot of work to be done at Cape Horn. Over the coming weeks, drivers are going to see big changes as the project’s most technically challenging components come together in a hurry. When the new Cape Horn Interchange is open to traffic, drivers will be able to do in seconds what used to take them minutes,” Transportation Investment Corporation CEO Mike Proudfoot said.
