The British Columbia chapter of the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies recently held the 2013 Awards for Engineering Excellence at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

The awards recognize engineering accomplishments in the categories of Buildings, Municipal Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Natural Resources, Energy and Industry Engineering and Soft Engineering. Each category gives out one Merit award and one Excellence award.

A Lieutenant Governor’s Award is also given out to one of the category winners that the judges have deemed exceptional. This year the Lieutenant Governor’s Award went to Ausenco with Bush Bohlman & Partners, GENIVAR and Read Jones Christoffersen for their work on Seismic Retrofit Guidelines.

Andrew Mill of APEGBC was one of the winners of the Lieutenant Governor’s Award and he described the challenges in re-examining and reinventing guidelines to predict B.C. buildings and other structures from seismic disturbances.

ACEC-BC president Keith Sashaw also gave an overview of the organization and its history, as well as putting the awards in context with the continued work of B.C.’s engineering community.
