VIDEO: The George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project
Construction on the George Massey Tunnel began in 1957 and once opened in the public in 1959 the structure became a vital transportation link for the Lower Mainland.
However in the decades since its initial construction, the tunnel has contributed to congestion and traffic delays, and a new bridge is in the works to replace the aging infrastructure.
The Journal of Commerce spoke to both Geoff Freer, the executive director of the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project and technical director Neil Valsangkar about the challenges of replacing the tunnel with a large bridge and new interchanges to alleviate congestion.
