Vancouver's construction industry, labour leaders, government officials and the general public are marking the 36th anniversary of one of the city's worst workplace tragedies this Monday.
On January 7, 1981, Guenter Otto Couvreux, 49, Donald Wayne Davis, 34, Yrjo Mitrunen, 46 and Brian John Stevenson, 21 fell to their deaths while building the Bentall Four building when a fly form platform gave way.
A memorial ceremony will be held on Monday, January 9 at 11:30 a.m. at the western corner of Discovery Park, located near the Burrard Skytrain station and across the street from the Bentall Four building.
Vancouver Kingsway MP Don Davies, Vancouver-False Creek MLA Sam Sullivan, and City of Vancouver councilor Raymond Louie will all speak at the event, as will BC Federation of Labour president Irene Lanzinger, WorkSafeBC vice president of prevention services Al Johnson, and Tom Sigurdson, the executive director of the BC Building Trades. Family members of the Bentall construction workers killed in the incident will also attend the event.
