CALGARY - The bodies of three people were found Monday after firefighters extinguished a burning vehicle in a northwest Calgary neighbourhood.

Police spokeswoman Emma Poole said identities or even genders had not been determined.

"As you can imagine, the vehicle was fully involved, so there was extensive damage," she said. "The medical examiner will be assisting us with the identification process."

Poole also said it was too early to tell if the deaths were the result of an accident or criminal activity.

"It's a fairly new community. My understanding is there's quite a bit of construction around there," she said.

The fire was put out about 7 a.m. and by late morning yellow police tape surrounded a construction site in the new subdivision of Sage Hill.

A police forensic unit van was set up outside the wooden frame of a building under construction and a van from the Calgary Fire Department investigators was also on the scene.

A red tarp covered the burned-out vehicle and there were black scorch marks on the outer wall of the building.

Officers in blue jumpsuits and gloves could be seen at the site.
