Construction crews were removing steel girders from the highway by using an excavator to load them from the roadway to a flat deck trailer. According to preliminary investigation, an Airdrie RCMP news release said, a steel girder swung into the traffic lane while being lifted into the trailer, and was struck by a north bound semi tractor trailer unit.

"The resulting impact struck a construction worker and he was pronounced dead on scene. No other injuries were reported. The driver of the semi-truck was not injured and remained on scene," the release said.

The northbound lanes of the highway were closed for several hours in order for Occupational Health and Safety to conduct its investigation.

The name of the deceased worker will not be released and the investigation is ongoing, Airdrie RCMP said.
