While many in B.C.'s Lower Mainland were out enjoying the weekend sunshine on June 20, Noel Keane, a site superintendent for EllisDon, spent his time supervising a complex concrete pour in Burnaby.
13 hour concrete pour required careful planning

"This logistically is a complicated day. It's a big day. It's a milestone day," said Keane at the site.

Crews spent about 13 hours pouring 3,700 cubic metres of concrete for a commercial tower core footing.

It's part of The Amazing Brentwood condo development near the Brentwood Town Centre.

It is one of two towers. The other's core footing was poured in March.

"It's taken a lot to get to this situation," Keane noted.

Preparation started in September when crews began excavating.

There was about a half a million cubic metres of material that needed to be taken out and crews still have about 180,000 cubic metres to go. Workers also had to lay roughly 700 tonnes of rebar.

One lane of Lougheed Highway was blocked after the closure was approved by the city.

"The entire footprint of the site is eight acres, so it's quite a large footprint," said Keane.

He added that the building will feature six floors of below grade parking. Another major challenge was the proximity to the mall. Many services running through the parkade had to be taken out and rerouted. And some tenants also had to be relocated to make way for demolition.

And for the pour, Keane had to make sure that concrete arrived on site at the right time in the right amount. Not too much and not too little. He said they were getting about 400 metres of concrete an hour with the help of two concrete companies – BURNCO and Magnum. They supplied out of three locations using four batching plants.

To ensure the proper timing, the team had three meetings to plan the marathon pour.

"Once you plan ahead and you have a bit of foresight, I think it goes pretty well and it seems to be going well," Keane said.

The development is scheduled for completion in 2017. James KM Cheng Architects Inc. is the project's architect and EllisDon is managing it. The development has a total of 563 units.
