VIU receives $22.4 million for expansion

The federal government, Province of B.C. and VIU will together make a $22.4 million investment to expand the school's marine, automotive and trades complex as well as create a district geo-exchange energy system. The marine, automotive and trades complex project will involve 629 square metres of renovations along with 2,014 square metres of new construction. The expansion will increase capacity by 128 full-time equivalent spaces across the automotive, motorcycle, marine and carpentry programs.

The new district geo-exchange energy system will reduce carbon output by tapping into geothermal energy, a release explains. Construction is expected to begin in early 2017.
