The two Canadian projects are Marine Gateway, in Vancouver, and Toronto's West Don Lands.

The Toronto project, on an 80-acre site, involved the transformation of former industrial lands into a sustainable, mixed-use, pedestrian-friendly, riverside community.

Marine Gateway is a LEED Gold mixed-use development that combines 820,000 square feet of residential condominiums, rental housing, an office building, retail and public space.

Credits for Marine Gateway include PCI Developments Corp., developer, and Perkins+Will, designer.

Contributors to the West Don Lands were master developer Waterfront Toronto; developers Urban Capital, Drean Unlimited, Kilmer Group, Toronto Community Housing; public realm designers Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates Inc., PFS Studio with the Planning Partnership and &Co., Claude Cormier & Associates, NAK Design Strategies; architectural design – River City: Saucier & Perrotte, ZAS Architects; architectural design – Canary District: architectsAlliance, KPMB Architects, Page + Steele/IBI Group Architects, Daoust Lestage, MacLennan Jaunkalns Miller Architects; and design/builder – Canary District EllisDon Inc., Ledcor Group.

The ULI Awards for Excellence are intended to recognize the full development process of a project, not just its architecture or design, notes a ULI media statement. Awards are presented to the development project.

The criteria for the awards include good design, leadership, contribution to the community, innovations, public-private partnership, environmental protection and enhancement, response to societal needs and financial success.
