The improvements added 21,600 new student spaces and modernized or replaced an additional 15,000 student spaces.

The province stated that the school projects have created thousands of jobs — both direct and indirect.

To celebrate the new spaces, government officials visited one of the province's new, state-of-the-art schools in St. Albert, where approximately 200 jobs were created by the Ecole Lois E. Hole Elementary School project.

"Our board of trustees chose to name this school after one of the most well-loved and respected women in the history of St. Albert and Alberta, and the school has been designed to honour her commitment to education and the environment," said Glenys Edwards, board chair for St. Albert Public Schools in the release. "This school will also help ease the pressure on our other schools due to tremendous growth in our district."

Later this year nine more school projects are scheduled to open, creating more than 1,500 new student spaces and modernizing 4,800 other spaces.

Next spring, 13 projects will wrap up, creating 8,000 additional spaces and modernizing 1,800.
