Len Garis, the fire chief for the City of Surrey, B.C. spoke to delegates about research into the safety of wood buildings at the recent Wood Solutions Fair held in downtown Vancouver.
Garis addressed research he has undertaken that concludes wood is no more dangerous a construction material related to fire than any other material used in modern buildings.
Most fires in sprinkler-enabled buildings are confined to the room where the incident began, he said, and are not at an increased risk.
Garis also said that his team has designed a best practices manual regarding wood construction, to reduce the risks of a fire at the building's most vulnerable stage.
