Alberta Utilities approves AltaLink transmission line proposal

The construction of a $133 million, 240-kilovolt (kV) transmission line between Pincher Creek and Lethbridge has been approved by Alberta’s independent utilities regulator.

The Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) concluded that AltaLink’s proposal was in the public interest, because it met the need identified by the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO), as well as social, environmental and economic considerations.

Construction of the 100 kilometre line and related substations will facilitate development of renewable wind-powered electricity generation in southwest Alberta and reinforce transmission capacity in the region.

The AUC requires AltaLink to follow a route, utilize certain towers and to investigate consolidating lines along part of the route to minimize its impact on landowners.
