Orillia Market Square aims for LEED® Silver certification
The City of Orillia will receive $4 million from the Building Canada Fund as part of the Federal Stimulus Package towards the cost of constructing the $18.4 million Orillia Market Square and Public Library.
The 44,000-square-foot building is located at Market Street and Mississauga Street in Orillia and will include:
- A public library with a second floor looking out over the main floor, which will include a youth area, reading areas and a children’s play area fronting onto Mississauga Street with a large bay window and fireplace.
- The historical Orilliana Collection, a collection of books written by local authors, which will have its own space accessed over a bridge on the second floor.
- A reading area that will double as a showcase for artists.
- An open-concept main floor with a circulation desk and popular reading materials.
- 900 square feet of space in the library that will be a public market, with single stalls outside the building that have power and water hook-ups, and retractable awnings.
- A civic square located on site that will be a flexible, durable and maintainable space.
The two-storey building will aim for LEED® Silver certification and include plenty of natural light and a green roof. The project will also seek LEED points for insulation and general building performance.
Working drawings are underway and are expected to be completed by early fall 2009.
