Shop owner suing VANOC over pre-Olympics road construction disruptions

The owner of a gelato shop near Vancouver’s Olympic Athletes Village is suing for disruptions caused by the games and pre-games road construction.

Mario’s Gelati filed a lawsuit for $2.5 million in losses in B.C. Supreme Court against VANOC, Vancouver city hall, and the B.C. and federal governments for Olympic street closures.

According to the lawsuit, the defendants illegally closed 1st Avenue between Ontario and Quebec streets, since it wasn’t a venue or pedestrian corridor under civic Olympic bylaws.

The statement of claim said construction in front of the shop lasted for seven months and the work is still affecting business. The owner alleges city officials promised the project would take a month to complete and that the road and sidewalk would be restored to their original condition afterwards.

Sidewalk access hasn’t yet been restored.
