U.S. construction employment up in March

The total number of jobs in the U.S. economy increased by 162,000 in March, to 138.9 million compared to February, the largest rise in three years.

According to official figures released by the U.S. Labor Department, employment in construction held steady with an increase of 15,000 in March. The industry had lost an average of 72,000 jobs per month in the prior 12 months.

In March, the number of unemployed persons was little changed at 15 million, and the unemployment rate remained at 9.7 percent. Manufacturing employment increased by 17,000, with gains concentrated in fabricated metal products (9,000) and in machinery (6,000).

The industry has added 45,000 jobs in the first three months of 2010.
