Disaster averted

Crane collapse snarls Toronto traffic

SAUL CHERNOS

Sherbourne Street in downtown Toronto was closed recently after a crane tipped over onto several powerlines. No injuries were reported.

The mobile crane was being used to transport equipment to a downtown condo project when it tipped over March 31.

The mishap occurred shortly after rush hour. The crane, a 500E2 by National Crane, was reported to have narrowly missed a building across the street. Police closed the street for much of the day, while crews used a larger crane to free the tipped one from the wires.
