VIDEO: BC Hydro upgrades the Ruskin Dam

BC Hydro is upgrading the Ruskin Dam, an 82-year old structure in Mission, British Columbia. Chief amongst the improvements to the facility are seismic upgrades and a substantial revamp of the powerhouse.

Boyd Mason, the project manager for the Ruskin Dam upgrade, spoke to the Journal of Commerce about the challenges faced by the project as they modernize an almost century-old structure, as well as aspects of the dam which were so well constructed originally that they do not need to be upgraded, such as the rotors.

Mason also explained that the seismic safeguards presently in place were not built to modern standards, and that the upgrades will ensure that the dam is seismically safe for the next 100 years.

Completion of the project is estimated for 2018.
