Compensation changed for injured apprentices in B.C.

Starting July 1, the way injured apprentices are compensated in British Columbia by WorkSafeBC will change.

Since 2002, apprentices, who are injured on the job, are eligible to earn a journeyman’s salary if they miss more than 10 weeks of work.

This can double their salary to a level that would otherwise take up to five years to obtain.

Bill 14 changes that.

Average earnings for apprentices will soon be calculated based on their current earnings.

The change to the Workers Compensation Act applies to all industries in the province, not just construction.

The changes don’t impact long-term and permanent disability compensation.
