Report on Highway 63 completed

A report from Alberta MLA Mike Allen on Highway 63 from Edmonton to Fort McMurray is recommending faster twinning and adding passing lanes.

Alberta Transportation Minister Ric McIver says he supports almost all the ideas in the report, but will not support photo radar or tolls on the highway.

Highway 63 is the main highway to the oilsands region and has been dubbed the “Highway of Death” due to the many fatalities on the road over the years.

The government announced in 2006 that it would twin a 240-kilometre stretch, but critics have said the work is not progressing quickly enough. For more on this story keep reading the Journal of Commerce.
