The new system will consist of three projects: construction of the McLoughlin Wastewater Treatment Plant and Marine Outfall, a Biosolids Energy Centre and Conveyance System Upgrades.

The Biosolids Energy Centre portion of the Program will be delivered through a public-private partnership (P3), with support from the P3 Canada Fund.

Three levels of government have agreed to fund the project.

The feds will contribute up to $253 million, the province will chip in about $248 million and the Capital Regional District will provide about $281 million.

Sewage from the region is currently pumped into the ocean.

Work on the project will begin this year.
