New piping trades foundation course offered

The Government of British Columbia and the Piping Industry Apprenticeship Board are introducing the first ever piping trades foundation course in Kitimat, B.C.

The piping trades exploratory and foundational training program will lead to level one certification in either welding, steam-fitting, sprinkler-fitting and plumbing. There will be 37 students in the first intake for the program.

Participants in the program will be trained at the UA Piping Industry College of British Columbia with much of the training taking place in Kitimat at a newly opened satellite campus. The program begins with a six-week exploratory phase, after which point participants decide to either enter the foundation program or technical training.

Participants must be Labour Market Agreement eligible - meaning they are unemployed, non-Employment Insurance individuals, or are employed, low-skilled individuals. The training program is expected to wrap-up in March, 2014.
