VIDEO: COCA president Grant McMillan

Grant McMillan, the president of the Council of Construction Associations and a Journal of Commerce editorial advisory board member, dropped by the Journal of Commerce office last week to talk about some the issues he thinks are most important to employers in the construction industry.

McMillan covered the issue of overcompensation for apprentices, which he said has now been corrected by new legislation. Previously, he said, injured apprentices were paid more to stay home than to work and so had little impetus to head back to the worksite.

Prompt filing of injury claims is also important, McMillan said, and recommended using the WorkSafeBC online portal to submit claims, in order to avoid unnecessary expenses and assure themselves that the claim is going to the right person. McMillan also gave a sort preview of a future column, where he will cover the WorkSafeBC appeal system, which he said many employers aren’t even aware exists.
