Explosion rocks Calgary asphalt plant
Alberta Occupational health and Safety is investigating the cause of an explosion that blew the lid off of a containment vessel in the yard of a southeast Calgary asphalt plant.
“Workers were heating a plugged valve on an asphalt emulsion tank,” said Alberta Occupational Health and Safety spokesperson Brookes Merritt.
“As the valve unplugged, gas in the tank caught fire and flashed, causing an explosion. The top of the storage tank blew off and landed one and a half blocks away, knocking down electrical lines on Barlow Trail.”
The incident happened at about 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 15 at McAsphalt Industries Ltd., which is located at 7404 30th Ave SE.
The container explosion scattered debris over a large area and damaged nearby business. There was no fire and no one was injured, but Barlow Trail was closed in both directions.
McAsphalt halted work after the incident and Occupational Health and Safety is investigating.
