Saskatchewan safety blitz

The RCMP and Saskatchewan government are trying to put the brakes on speeders in construction zones after a young worker was killed. Highways Minister Don McMorris said Mounties will begin traffic enforcement blitzes in the busiest orange zones.

It is expected to cost about $15,000 in overtime for officers until the end of this construction season.

He said about 175 tickets are issued each year in orange zones, but he added more needs to be done because workers say speed continues to be an issue. The government is also looking at more enforcement measures for next year.

Ashley Dawn Richards, 18, was working as a flag person when she was hit by an SUV in a construction zone last month. RCMP said charges are pending against the 44-year-old driver of the SUV.
