Manitoba looks to trim

The Manitoba government is still trying to find promised budget cuts halfway through its fiscal year.

In the spring budget, Finance Minister Stan Struthers pledged to sell off $80 million in government assets and find $128 million in day-to-day spending reductions. Struthers says so far, the government has not sold off any assets and has found $66 million in spending cuts.

Struthers says the province is reducing some advertising and pushing back some construction projects. He also says some vacant civil service jobs are being eliminated, although no workers are being laid off.

Struthers says he is committed to finding the rest of the savings, which are needed to keep the deficit from rising beyond a projected $448 million.
